Marlborough District Library earthquake strengthening

Glenn Webster, District Libraries Manager, Marlborough District Libraries, has provided the following update. Thanks for keeping us informed, Glenn. It’s great to read that the noisy work has been completed. I suspect that many of us will be able to relate only too well to such an upheaval:

Earthquake strengthening of the Marlborough District Library commenced on Tuesday 29 March, 2016 and was carried out in two stages that took three months to complete.

The building was shrink wrapped to provide water protection and dust suppression while the bricks on the first floor and awnings were removed. The bricks were replaced with a combination of windows and axon panel cladding.

The single glazed metal framed windows were replaced with double glazed safety glass with aluminium framing. These were tinted and internally frosted for sun protection and privacy.

Prior to the commencement of stage two, the Children’s Library was closed and part of the collection relocated downstairs to allow staff to move out of the workroom and into the existing renovated space while this area was strengthened. Other smaller collections downstairs were moved and shuffled closer together to allow the Children’s section to be accommodated.

Additional to this project the leaking butynol roof on the east wing (fiction and large print areas) was replaced with long run colorsteel. As contractors need storage space for their machinery and equipment the library carpark was closed for the duration.


The strengthening work brought with it prolonged drilling, with accompanying noise. This resulted in library customers not staying as long as they would normally. Regular activities continued as much as possible; however school holiday programming had to be suspended while the strengthening work was undertaken.

The result of this work was a refreshed, light and bright revamped first floor – Children’s Library and staff area.



Aoraki Regional Roundup

Sorry for the lengthy silence lately. I aim to post more regularly in future.

There has been a lot going on in the Aoraki region over the winter. Here’s a taste of what’s been happening:

Visit to the Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre

On Thursday 14th April, we were treated to a tour of the brand new Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre  The library’s collection is pristine. I want to work there! It’s a splendid example of cohesion of library, museum, and local authority public services. The furniture is colourful, comfortable and dynamic. It’s easy to see why the centre is so popular with people of all ages. The big, comfy, wraparound armchairs are wonderful!

Kaiapoi Library

We gathered in the beautifully appointed, versatile community meeting room for  drinks and nibbles, and a very informative presentation by Carolyn Robertson  and Kate Ogden  regarding INELI. This was followed by a tour of the superb, purpose built facilities. The simplicity of design enhances the functionality and warmth of the building. We are grateful to the staff of the centre for hosting the event. I am sure that many of us will spread the news, and return. I couldn’t stop talking about the centre the next day at work!

After the tour, those of us who could linger moved a short distance to the Three Cows restaurant for a tasty meal and to catch up with colleagues.

Quiz Night

The world famous Aoraki LIANZA Quiz Night was held in the comfort of the Cashmere Club on Tuesday 26 July. Despite the short notice for the event, (your committee promises to do better next year!), there was a excellent turnout and a fun night appeared to have been had by all.




Our delightful bar attendant turned out to be a student at the University of Canterbury. How she manages to study, work 50 hours a week, (at three jobs), and still keep smiling and providing such spectacular service is nothing short of awesome! (And  I never say ‘awesome’).  The supper was tasty and there was plenty to go around.

Thanks to Valerie Anderson, Joan Simpson, and Cathy Palmer for setting the questions, to Joan and Valerie for adjudicating, and to the lovely Anton Angelo for his services as quiz-master. Thanks also to our treasurer, Christine Grant, not only for loosening the purse strings 🙂 and making the event free this year, but also for taking time to purchase the prizes.(We can’t promise a free event next year though!). There was only one glitch, and it was a pretty major one: An oversight resulted in the answers to the quiz questions not being given on the night! How come no one said anything at the time? You lot are so polite! Watch this space for both the questions and the answers within the next few days.  OK, you know me by now; give me a week 🙂

Aoraki LIANZA AGM and Soup & Stories Evening

Our AGM was held on Tuesday 16 August in the premises of CORE Education in Kilmore Street, Christchurch. This is the second time that CORE have graciously allowed us to use their facilities for this purpose, and the Aoraki LIANZA committee is grateful for permission to hold our meeting in such an outstanding venue. There was an excellent attendance. The AGM was mercifully brief, (our aim), and it was followed by  several exciting and thought-provoking presentations by able and interesting speakers on topics of current interest in Libraryland. Well done to everyone who presented! Thank you for informing and inspiring us! Paula had concocted several varieties of delicious soup to keep out the winter chill, and we snacked on tasty savouries, and scrumptious slices, washed down with a selection of thirst-quenching beverages.

During the meeting, our committee chair, Sarah Fraser, put in a digital appearance in the form of an electronic greeting from the Jungfrau mountain in Switzerland. Nice for some 🙂 Sarah has kindly provided the  the photographs below.The first one was taken inside the mountain in the ice palace. It looks cold! The second photo was taken at the top of the mountain.Stunning!
